Troubleshooting for the GeoGuessr Steam

There could be several reasons for experiencing issues when playing. To help us identify if its a local issue or a bug, please read the following.  

Most of these are simple steps to do and do not require technical expertise. You can find help for most of these searching online if needed.


Performance Issues (i.e. lagging, game or map not loading): 

  • Restart Steam and/or your computer
  • Force quit Steam 
  • Try lowering resolution on your device/monitor 
  • Ensure the game is running on your discrete GPU
  • Delete your local user data. You can find the user folder on your computer. It should look something like this:

    C:\Users\<YourUser>\AppData\Local\<GameName>\

    C:\Users\<YourUser>\AppData\Roaming\<GameName>\

Black screen, white screen, or location issues: 

If you are encountering issues where: 

  • You get a black screen instead of seeing the location. 
  • Different locations than your opponents during a round.
  • Location changing during a round. 

Please note that these can be considered bugs in very few cases, but are usually common issues related to network connection.


You can report the game on the game summary page on GeoGuessr's website, so our team can refund you the lost elo rating. If you need to go back to an old game summary, these game links can either be found under Activities (If it is a active game) or Ongoing Games (In case it is still in progress). If you do not have access to GeoGuessr web for your Steam account, please send us the game replay link. 


If you are experiencing this issue more often, we recommend following the steps below to help with loading and connection problems:

  • Restart your router/modem
  • Move closer to the wifi router
  • Pause any background downloads while playing


F11: Can't switch from full-screen or windowed using command F11

Please note that this is a purposeful change due to common errors related to full-screen gameplay. You can switch this back from windowed to fullscreen using the following steps, but please note that this is not recommended by our devs as it can lead to bugs: 

  • Settings > Display > select Fullscreen from Windowed  


My Issue is still not solved: 

If your issue persist, kindly contact support with a summary of the issue and and steps required to recreate the issue. It would also be helpful to provide the following information: 

  • Device Type (e.g., Desktop, Laptop, Tablet, Mobile):
  • Operating System & Versions (e.g., Windows, macOS, Linux)
  • Screen Resolution:
  • Graphics Card (if known):
  • Any browser extensions/scripts/plugins that are enabled:
  • Screenshots or recording of the problem your are encountering
  • Link to summary/replay of the game where the issue occurred.
