Welcome to the GeoGuessr Steam Edition FAQ! Here, we aim to provide you with all the essential information you need to enjoy your gaming experience. Whether you're a newcomer or a seasoned player, this guide will help you navigate through the features and requirements of the Steam Edition.

Do I need to pay to play GeoGuessr Steam Edition?

The GeoGuessr Steam Edition is free to download and play! However, to unlock additional game modes, in-game purchases are required. Below is a breakdown of the modes available to you:

Free Game Modes:

• Quickplay Solo Duels: Pit yourself in against other players in a 1v1 duel. 
• Quickplay Team Duels: Team up with friends and face of against other teams in 2v2 duels
• Free Daily Challenge: Participate in a daily challenge to guess 5 locations and get the highest score you can. 

Purchased the Steam Pass or have a Yearly Unlimited/Elite subscription on a web-created account:

• Competitive Solo Duels: Engage in ranked 1v1 duels to climb the competitive ladder.
• Competitive Team Duels: Join forces with friends for competitive team matches.
• Seasonal Rewards: Compete in the competitive Seasons for rewards! 
• Keep your Daily Challenge Streak and earn Achievements: Maintain your streak and earn achievements that showcase your GeoGuessing skills.

Note:

To access the paid features via the Steam Edition, your web or mobile subscription must be at the Unlimited or Elite tier. The Steam Pass only unlocks paid features on the Steam Edition and does not provide the same advantages as a subscription through mobile or web. Remember, the Steam Pass is valid for one year from the date of purchase and does not automatically renew. Additionally, the Steam Edition does not currently support single-player game modes like Classic Maps.

Is a GeoGuessr account necessary to play?

Yes, a GeoGuessr Web account is required to play the Steam Edition. When you first launch the game, you can create a new GeoGuessr account or link an existing one. Once your account is created, it will be automatically linked to the Steam Edition, allowing you to enjoy seamless gameplay across all platforms.

Note: If you used the Steam Edition before April 9th, 2026, you may have created an account directly through the Steam Edition. Accounts made this way cannot access the web version of the game and will require the Steam Pass for paid features.

Is GeoGuessr Steam Edition cross-play compatible?

Absolutely! If you have the Steam Pass or a Web subscription, you can compete against GeoGuessr Browser subscribers in Solo and Team Ranked duels. However, Quickplay Solo Duels are exclusive to the Steam Edition, meaning you'll only match with other Steam players. In Quickplay Team Duels, you can compete against teams on Steam as well as Unranked Team Duels teams on the browser. Please note that your friends list in the Steam Edition will only include your Steam friends.
