You can add friends by searching for a username in the search-bar. You can then click on "Add as friend" and a request will be sent. You will also see 'suggested friends' which show your most recent opponents, as well as mutual friends.
If you get a friend request, you will get a notification on the top right corner once a friend has invited you. Click accept and you can play.
